Barbara Bertagnolli
I draw my main inspiration from the colours, cuts and shape of the gemstones I select, often using more unusual cuts and shapes to enhance the abstract appearance of the final piece. I work directly with the stones and without drawings, using my own distinctive technique combining silver and applied 24 carat gold.
The influences for my one-off pieces come from the Medieval period, the Vienna Secession, and contemporary abstract forms.
At the Treasure exhibition I would be showing a selection of:
• Necklaces set with a variety of mirror-cut asymmetrical coloured gem stones showing the Medieval influence.
• Rings - some of which will include abstract forms enhanced by the use of black, cinnamon and rock diamonds.
• Bangles and articulated bangles showing my individual mixed metal technique with the Secession style coming through.
• Earrings in bold shapes emphasized by the colours and cuts of the stones I use.
My jewellery has been described by Lucia van der Post as strong, graphic and looking utterly contemporary because of its simple strength, but ancient too, for precisely the same reason.
